Meiji politician Yamagata’s death anniversary – Mountain flower ceremony Hanayose and tea ceremony Ka-getsu-no-shiki

February 1st marks the death anniversary of Murin-an’s founder, Aritomo Yamagata. This year, we will pay tribute to Yamagata, known for his fondness of camellia japonica and the many gardens he created throughout Japan, by holding a Hanayose花寄せand Ka-getsu-no-shiki花月之式 at Murin-an. Hanayose is a tradition to gather various flowers in the tea room, so that each participant can arrange them one after another. This tradition is sometimes also held to remember the dead. Ka-getsu-no-shiki 花月之式 is one of the total seven training methods, Shichi-ji-shiki七事式: Cards are passed between several people and each card drawn gives further instruction on how to prepare the tea.
Incidentally, another name for Yamagata’s favorite, camellia japonica, happens to be “mountain flower” 山花 in Japanese. With the Higashiyama mountains as borrowed scenery at Murin-an, the flower’s name perfectly suits the ceremonies held to marks his death anniversary.
