5/15 “Japanese Garden Salon in English”: Two Session Event (Classroom & Garden)

Learn the overall history of Japanese gardens while looking at gardens that have been designated Japanese cultural properties.
Lectures are organized by Ueyakato Landscape, a longstanding landscape firm in Kyoto that has served as Nanzen-ji Temple’s exclusive gardening company for 174 years, and are taught by employee Michael Shapiro. We hope you will consider joining us for this truly rare opportunity.

(Classroom Session) May 15, 2022 (Sun.)
After a complete summary of Japanese garden history from the seventh century until the present day, we’ll discuss our favorite Japanese gardens and use the knowledge we’ve learned to deepen our understanding of them together.

(Garden Session) June 26, 2022 (Sun.)
Tour the garden with Michael and apply your knowledge of Japanese gardens to Murin-an and the gardener skills used to care for it in each season and its connection to the Higashiyama landscape. After the lecture, enjoy exploring the garden and reviewing on your own!
