無鄰菴茶道教室

11月8日（金）、9日（土）に母屋2階、およびお茶室で無鄰菴茶道教室を開催致しました。開炉が開始となり、初めてのお稽古日の様子でございます。この日は畳を移動する際の歩く歩幅、茶杓の扱いや姿勢などの細やかな指導をお稽古の中で行いました。

Murin-an Tea School
On November 8 and 9 (Fri. & Sat.), we held tea ceremony classes on the second floor of Murin-an’s main house and inside the tearoom. These are pictures of our first lessons this year where we opened the hearth. At these lessons, we learned detailed instructions about the proper space between steps when moving across the tatami mats, how to treat the tea scoop, and how to maintain the correct posture.

無鄰菴きもの教室-生活の中に文化を！-

11月6日（水）に母屋2階で開催されたきもの教室では、初めての方や、着物を久しぶりに着用する方などで賑わいました。講師の指導と姿鏡を確認しながら帯の位置などを確かめて着付けを行っている様子です。

Murin-an Kimono School
The kimono lesson we held on November 6 (Wed.) was bustling with people wearing kimonos either for the first time, or for the first time in a long time. Here are some pictures of our students checking the position of their obi sashes in the mirror under their teacher’s instructions.

シジュウカラの飛来

早朝にシジュウカラの小群が訪れました。庭園内の樹々を小刻みに移動しながら、昆虫やさなぎを見つけてはついばみ、そのまますぐに移動していきました。この野鳥は一年中見ることができますので、タイミングが合えば散策中に枝々を移動している姿がございます。時々一緒に行動しているコゲラ（キツツキ）も見られることもございます。

(Staff Eyes) Arrival of the Japanese Tit
Early in the morning, a small flock of Japanese tits visited Murin-an. They fluttered around the garden’s trees as they looked for and pecked at pupa, before quickly flying away. This wild bird is observable all year round. So if the timing is right, you may see one moving from branch to branch while strolling around the garden. You can also sometimes see them flying together with pygmy woodpeckers.

クロマツのお手入れ

芝生と苔の境目付近にあるクロマツの葉むしりを行いました。細枝から伸びた松葉は、指先の感覚を頼りに丁寧に取り除いていきます。樹冠部分から葉むしりを始めた矢先、松葉の香りが周囲を包み込んでいきました。手を入れた箇所は透かした感じとなっています。

Tending to the Black Pines
We tended to the black pine between Murin-an’s grass lawn and mossy area. Our gardener relies on the sensation in his fingertips to carefully remove the pine needles growing out from slender branches. Once he began plucking needles off the pine tree’s crown, the area was suddenly wrapped up in the scent of pine needles. The areas he worked on now convey a feeling of transparency.

「無鄰菴野鳥ミニ講座」／Wednesday: Wild Bird Lesson

11月6日（水）の午後、バンについて解説致しました。隣を流れている琵琶湖疎水にはバンとオオバンがやってくることもあり、その違いをお伝えをしながら生態のお話もさせていただきました。昔は食用としても捕獲されていた野鳥でもあり、また野鳥の弁足（水かき）が水鳥によって様々であることをイラストを描きながら解説も致しました。ご参加の方から「楽しく興味深く聞かせて頂きました。これからはもっと注意深く観察していきたいと思います。」などのコメントをいただきました。

毎週水曜日に開催している「無鄰菴野鳥ミニ講座」は14:00~14:30の30分、母屋1階の8畳の間で行っています。1種を取り上げてその野鳥の解説や生態の面白さなどを、お庭を眺めつつ、やってきた野鳥の解説も行いながらお話をしています。

Murin-an Wild Bird Mini-lecture
On the afternoon of November 6, we held a mini-lecture on the common moorhen. Both common moorhens and common coots visit the Lake Biwa Canal flowing next to Murin-an. We discussed the difference between these two birds and their ecologies. We also explained how the common moorhen was once caught for food and used illustrations to show participants the different varieties of webbed feet that exist among water fowl.

クチナシ青果実

園路の様々な場所でクチナシの果実が膨らんできました。もう少しするとオレンジへ、そして朱色に変化していきます。
熟しても割れないところから「口無し」というところから名が付けられ、この果実は黄色の染料として用いられるだけでなく、山梔子（さんしし）の名で漢方としても使われています。

Green Fruit on the Gardenias
All along Murin-an’s garden path, there are now green fruits swelling on the gardenias. Before long, they will turn orange and then eventually scarlet.
In Japan, these plants are called kuchinashi (literally “mouthless”) because their fruit does not split open even after they ripen. In Japan, gardenia fruits are not only used as a yellow dye but also as an herbal remedy in the practice of Chinese medicine.

季節の庭を楽しむ無鄰菴茶会「開炉茶会」

茶家では11月から炉を使用する季節となります。11月4日(月）に開催されたお茶会では、庭園内の色づき始めのモミジの紹介、お茶室内では炉についてのお話などをしながらお菓子とお抹茶をご堪能くださいました。ご参加の方から「別世界を体験させていただきました。茶道を身近に感じることができました。」「お庭の説明や草花の説明など、知っていたこと知らなかったことなど、とても楽しく拝聴させていただきました。お茶・お菓子も美味しかったです。」などのコメントをいただきました。

A Murin-an Tea Ceremony to Enjoy the Garden’s Seasons
(An Open-hearth Tea Ceremony)

For tea houses, November is the season to use a hearth. At this tea ceremony held on November 4 (Mon.), our guests thoroughly enjoyed seeing the garden’s maples changing color and, inside the tearoom, hearing a discussion of the hearth as they ate Japanese sweets and drank matcha tea.

坪庭の手入れ

母屋1階の8畳の間や10畳から見渡せる坪庭にはシホウチクやシダが生育しています。ササの葉が苔の上に落ちたものは手ぼうきで。シダに関しては、外側の大きく育った葉を取り除いていきました。シダの芽が少しずつ生育してきましたので、春にはまた新しい青葉が伸びていきます。

Tending to Murin-an’s Enclosed Garden
The enclosed garden whose scenery can be seen from the 10- and 8-tatami mat spaces on the main house’s first floor has square bamboo and ferns growing inside it. For bamboo grass that had fallen on the moss we used a hand whisk. For ferns, we removed overgrown leaves on the garden’s outer edge. Because the fern buds have steadily grown little by little, they will stretch out into fresh green leaves by spring.

生徒開炉茶会

11月3日（日）、お茶室にて無鄰菴茶道教室にお越しいただいている生徒さんとそのお知り合いの方を対象に、開炉茶会を開催いたしました。亭主と客人に分かれ、講師の指導のもと、一連の流れを体験しながらのお茶会となりました。待合いとして使用される相伴席ではしつらえと共にお香を楽しんでいただきました。生徒さんから「お茶会のいろいろな役目を学べて勉強になりました」「茶会の準備から先生にご指導いただき大変有意義なお茶会でした」とのコメントをいただきました。

A Student Tea Ceremony Using an Open Hearth
On November 3 (Sun.), we held an open-hearth tea ceremony with students from our tea school and some of their friends. We split into hosts and guests and then held a tea ceremony while following a series of steps under our teacher’s instruction. Our participants enjoyed the decorations and incense arranged in the seat for accompanying guests (shobanseki) used as a waiting room (machiai).
