リンドウが見頃を迎えています。

モミジ林にある水面へと続く園路の東側のリンドウが今年も青色の花を開いてくれました。昨年に比べると少し早めの開花となり、10月26日に一番咲きを確認いたしました。水面に映るモミジとともに、その姿をお楽しみください。

Now’s the time to see Murin-an’s Japanese Gentians.
Once again this year, there are blue flowers blooming on the Japanese Gentians to the east of the garden path extending from the maple tree grove to the water’s surface. They bloomed a little earlier than last year; we confirmed the first flowering on October 26. Please enjoy looking at them together with the reflection of the maple trees on the water.

庭園を知る日

10月28日（月）京都造形芸術大学 環境デザイン学科教授の尼崎博正先生と京都造園建設業協会 会長 野間 秀行先生の引率のもと、生徒の方々が実習のため、無鄰菴に来訪下さいました。
実習のスケジュールは盛沢山！流れにある落ち葉の除去や護岸下草のそうじなど。午後は母屋2階で講義後、芝地や苔手入れなどがございました。庭師の指導を受けながら水辺植物の扱い方やクマザサなどの剪定を行い、夕方に全ての実習が終了となりました。連日降っていた雨により、苔は青々としていますが、その反面、土壌が柔らかく、苔の手入れにとても気を遣い作業をされていました。
来園者からは、「いつもと違うお庭の風景があり、また、お庭の知識を勉強される方々が育って活躍されていくことは嬉しい限りです」とのお声をいただきました。

Learn About Gardens Day
On October 28 (Sun.), we held an event for Garden Day where Prof. Hiromasa Amasaki of Kyoto University of Art and Design and Hideyuki Noma, chairman of the Kyoto Landscape and Construction Cooperative, led students on a training session at Murin-an.
The schedule for this training session was quite full! Students cleaned fallen leaves out of the stream and cleaned undergrowth from the shore bank protection. In the afternoon, after a lecture held on the second floor of the main house, they tended to the grass lawn and moss area. Under our gardeners’ instructions, they learned how to treat aquatic plants and pruned the Kuma bamboo grass. All training came to a conclusion by the evening. Although the moss shone with a lush green color thanks to the rain which fell for several days prior to training day, as a result the soil was very soft and our trainees exercised great care when working on the moss.

芝生の手入れ

太陽の日差しを受けて、芝生のランナーが園路に張り出すようになりました。皆さまが歩く場所、芝生の生育しているエリアを整備するために、園路内に入り込んだ芝を調整しています。時折立ち上がっては全体を見通して飛び出しがないか確認しながら行っていきました。
芝生内にある他のイネ科植物や、気温が低くなるとロゼットになって地面に葉を広げるものもあり、鎌も使いながら手作業で時間をかけて取り除いていきました。

Tending to Murin-an’s Lawn
Having gotten their light from the sun, the grass runners on Murin-an’s lawn are now jutting into the garden path. To maintain the areas where our visitors walk and where the lawn grows, we adjusted the grass that has wound up growing inside the garden path. We stood up occasionally to overlook the whole area and make sure there wasn’t any place where the lawn stuck out.
There are also other grass species on the lawn that turn a rosette color when the temperature drops lower and spread over the ground, so we devoted time to removing these by hand and with a scythe.

週末庭園巡り

10月27日(日）の午後、週末庭園を開催いたしました。園内のリンドウやホトトギスなどを愛でていただきながらお庭の解説を楽しんでいただきました。庭園内の植物にご興味をお持ちで、植物の花々をご覧になりつつ、苔の説明時には実際に触れていただき、楽しいお時間を過ごして頂きました。

Weekend Garden Tours
On the afternoon of October 27 (Sun.), we held weekend garden tours at Murin-an. In the garden, we had our guests enjoy the Japanese gentians and Japanese toad lilies as we explained the garden to them. They were very interested in the garden’s plants and enjoyed looking at each plant’s flowers as well as actually touching the moss.

無鄰菴のお茶のスタッフは言います。
「無鄰菴在釜は、いつものお点前とはちょっと違って、開放的な気分になれます。綺麗なお庭を目の前にして、お客様と対話をするお点前はワクワクする体験で、毎週とても楽しいんです。お作法はどうしよう？などと難しく考えないで気楽にお越しいただけると嬉しいです」
緑のお庭に囲まれた在釜はお茶のスタッフにとっても特別なんですね。
自由にお茶を楽しんでいただくのもよし、お作法について聞いてくださったらスタッフが丁寧にレクチャーいたします。

和菓子の「銘」と歌の世界

10月27日(日）の午後、京菓子 末富さまの会長 山口富蔵さまをお迎えして講座を開催いたしました。お菓子には銘があり、依頼主（買い手）の思いを引き出してイメージを形作っていきます。山頭火のお話でも銘の付け方の解説がございました。
作り手が成長するには、修行も必要ですが、お客様のイメージを深く読み取ることも欠かせません。和菓子の多彩な表現は作り手と依頼主との話し合いで表現が多様になります。色とりどりの表現の数々は作り手の経験も深くかかわる事を学びました。

講座の終盤では、お点前もあり、青い山をイメージしたお菓子を召し上がっていただきました。講座の最後には、本日解説時にご覧いただいた5種の主菓子もお持ち帰りいただきました。

The “Allusions” of Japanese Sweets and the World of Poetic Verse
On the afternoon of October 27, we invited Tomizo Yamaguchi, President of Kyoto Suetomi, to give a lecture. Japanese sweets each have their own signature allusion made according to the image that its commissioner (or buyer) has in mind. Even while discussing the haiku poet Santoka Taneda, Mr. Yamaguchi explained how these signature allusions are assigned.
For a creator of Japanese sweets to grow, training is necessary, but deeply reading into the image that the customer has in mind is also indispensable. The varied expressions of Japanese sweets take on a wide range through the discussions that a Japanese sweets item’s creator has with its commissioner.
In this lecture, we learned that the creator’s experiences are deeply involved in each one of the colorful expressions found in Japanese sweets.

There was a tea ceremony at the end of the lecture, where sweets created in the image of a lush green mountain were served. Our guests took home with five varieties of the Japanese tea sweets discussed during the lecture.

無鄰菴茶道教室

10月25日(金）・26日（土）、母屋2階とお茶室にて茶道教室を開催いたしました。この日、炉などのお話をお稽古の合間にお伝えいただきました。茶道で使われるたくさんの道具の名称は初めて聞くものも多く、各種の扱い方やその歴史についてのお話も新鮮味にあふれていました。

Murin-an Tea School
On October 25 and 26 (Fri. & Sat.), we held tea ceremony classes on the second floor of Murin-an’s main house. Between lessons, we discussed the hearth used for the tea ceremony. Many of our participants heard the names of the many implements used in the tea ceremony for the first time and found the instructor’s discussion of their history and how they are used quite refreshing.

ヤブラン青果実

薄紫色に咲いていたヤブランの花が終わり、緑色の果実へと変化しています。こちらの丸い実は時期が来ると黒色に熟していきます。
ランという名前が付いていますが、ユリの仲間でキジカクシ科の植物です。一年中ほとんど変わらない草姿で周囲の環境に左右されない丈夫な植物であり、庭園内では花が咲き終わったあとにも素朴な味わいをみせています。

Green Fruit on the Blue Lilyturf
The pale purple flowers blooming on the blue lilyturf have stopped flowering, and there are now green fruits growing on it. When the time comes, these round fruits will ripen into a black color.
Although referred to as an orchid in Japanese, this plant is a lily relative belonging to the Asparagaceae family. It is a resilient plant unaffected by the surrounding environment with a posture that remains unchanged throughout the year. In Murin-an’s garden, it maintains a simple and unaffected look even after its flowers have finished blooming.

キンモクセイとギンモクセイ

お庭内でキンモクセイ（橙色）とギンモクセイ（白色）が今年も開花しました。花開く頃、甘い香りが風にのって8畳の間に漂っています。
その昔、中国から雄株だけ持ち込まれたため、咲いている花は結実しないのです。また、開花以外の時期での判別は、葉っぱの縁のギザギザが顕著であれば「ギンモクセイ」でございます。
無鄰菴の両種はまだ樹幹が細いですが、樹皮が動物のサイ（犀）の足に似ているため、木犀（もくせい）と名付けられた植物です。

Gold Osmanthus and Silver Osmanthus
Once again, this year there is gold (orange) and silver (white) osmanthuses blooming in Murin-an’s garden. When they are in bloom, their sweet scent is carried by the wind inside the main house’s 8-tatami mat room.
Because long ago only males of this plant were brought to Japan from China, their flowers bear no fruit. When they aren’t flowering, you can tell them apart by finding the jagged leaf edges of the Silver Osmanthus.
The trunks of both varieties of this plant in Murin-an are still thin, but because their bark looks like a rhinoceros leg, in Japanese they are known as “wooden rhinos” (mokusei).
