「無鄰菴野鳥ミニ講座」／Wednesday: Wild Bird Lesson

10月23日（水）の午後、タカの仲間であるハチクマについてお話させていただきました。
まだまだ解明されていない部分も多い野鳥ですが、ハチクマの不思議な能力や、子育ての方法などにご興味を持っていただけました。開催中、いつもよりたくさんの野鳥の声がお庭から聴こえていたため、一早くそれらの声に気付く方法などもお伝えさせていただきました。

毎週水曜日に開催している「無鄰菴野鳥ミニ講座」は14:00~14:30の30分、母屋1階の8畳の間で行っています。1種を取り上げてその野鳥の解説や生態の面白さなどを、お庭を眺めつつ、やってきた野鳥の解説も行いながらお話をしています。

Murin-an Wild Bird Mini-lecture
On the afternoon of November 6, we held a mini-lecture on the common moorhen. Both common moorhens and common coots visit the Lake Biwa Canal flowing next to Murin-an. We discussed the difference between these two birds and their ecologies. We also explained how the common moorhen was once caught for food and used illustrations to show participants the different varieties of webbed feet that exist among water fowl.

セカイから見た日本を知る–文学作品の翻訳を通して–第5回『宮沢賢治』

10月19日（土）の午後、武田雅子さん（アメリカ文学研究者、大阪樟蔭女子大学名誉教授）をお迎えし、宮澤賢治の詩を紐解いていただきました。今期シリーズ最終回は宮沢賢治について。「春と修羅／序」「雨ニモマケズ」などの作品を題材に、各所の英文のや単語の表現を学んでいただきました。後半はティータイムもあり、日が落ちる夕暮れの雰囲気を楽しんでいただきました。

Seminar Series, Learning About How Japan Sees the World: As Seen Through Translated Works of Literature, No.5
On the afternoon of October 19 (Sat.), we welcomed Masako Takeda (American literature researcher and Professor Emeritus at Osaka Shoin Women’s University) to introduce some quotations from the poet Miyazawa Kenji translated into English. Using his “Spring and Asura” and “Be Not Defeated by the Rain” as examples we learned the English words and expressions used in each of their sections. With tea being served in the latter half of the lecture, our participants enjoyed the atmosphere of Murin-an’s sunset in the evening.

いつのまにか咲いていたホトトギス

いつのまにか咲いていたホトトギス。
小さくてつい見逃しそうですが、咲いている花びらの形や蕾の形、紫の斑ら模様が個性的で、じっと見入ってしまいます。

All of a sudden, the Japanese Toadlilies are blooming.
They’re so small that you might miss them, but the shapes of their petals and buds and their speckled purple pattern are so unique that you could gaze at that them forever.

ヒサカキの剪定

母屋8畳の南側に生育しているヒサカキの剪定を行いました。
剪定ばさみで入念に見極めながら根元から伸びてきた枝や樹幹を整えていきました。

Pruning the Japanese Euryas
Our gardener pruned the Japanese Euryas growing on the south side of the 8-tatami mat of the main house.
Through careful observation, he used his pruning clippers to shape the branches and trunks growing up from the roots.

即位礼にともなう記念解説シートの配布について

本日は今上天皇の即位礼正殿の儀が行われました。
これに併せて当施設では、奉祝行事といたしまして、「無鄰菴の稚松にまつわる物語」という無料の解説シートを配布しております。
無鄰菴には京都御所にあった松を明治天皇から下賜されたという歴史があります。施主の山縣有朋はその感激から庭園に「御賜稚松乃記」という記念碑を建立しました。
明治天皇から送られた松にまつわる物語を、この機会にぜひご覧ください。

無鄰菴在釜／Tuesdays: Japanese Tea

10月22日（火）は無鄰菴在釜の日です。
先週の無鄰菴在釜も各地から大勢のお客様に足を運んでいただきました。
昔、こちらのお庭で実習をしたというお客様、娘さんが京都に住んでいるから母子で来てくださったお客様。テレビを見て来ましたというお客様、、皆さん何かのご縁があって無鄰菴在釜のひとときを過ごしてくださっています。
無鄰菴在釜は毎週火曜日の9時から12時まで開催しております。どなたでもご自由に参加していただけます。ぜひ無鄰菴在釜へお越しください。スタッフ一同お待ち申し上げております。

チャノキの花

受付窓口の周辺や庭園内のチャノキに花が咲きました。
黄色い部分はオシベで1本1本が集まって1つの塊の様に見え、葉に隠れるように下向きに咲いています。白っぽい球形はつぼみで、ひと際大きな緑色の球形は、昨年咲いた花の実でございます。
ツバキと同じ仲間であるため、近くで眺めると小さなツバキの花姿や実に似ています。

The flowers on the tea plants around Murin-an’s reception window and in the garden.
The yellow part is made up of individual stamens grouped together to look like a single cluster and hang downward almost like they’re hiding underneath the leaves.

サザンカが咲き始めました。

モミジ林にあるサザンカの花が咲き始めました。
薄ピンク色の花びらがとともに2輪同時に咲き、今後も１つまた１つと花が咲く予定です。ツバキとサザンカはよく似ていますが、ツバキは花ごと地面に落ち、サザンカは花びらが地面に散らばります。また、ツバキに比べてサザンカは、葉裏の中心にある筋（葉脈）に細かな毛が多いのも特徴の１つです。

The sasanquas have started blooming.
The sasanquas in Murin-an’s maple grove have started blooming.
The pink petals on two of their flowers bloomed together, and we expect them to continue blooming one by one.
Camellias and sasanquas look alike, but camellia flowers fall to the ground all at once, whereas sasanqua petals flutter to the ground. Compared to camellias, sasanquas have many fine hairs on their leaf veins, which is one of their notable characteristics.
