週末庭園めぐり- 庭園コンシェルジュによる庭園ガイド
3月10日（日）の午後、春の芽吹きを準備している雨のお庭を回りながら、庭園ガイドを致しました。ご参加頂いた方には、無鄰菴庭園のポイント、山縣有朋の創りだした景観、雨の無鄰菴の見どころ、建物の構造や木の作りの組み方などをお伝えさせていただきました。ご参加頂いた方から「自分の失っていた自然感を再発見した感じです」とのお声をいただきました。

Weekend Garden Tour: A Garden Tour by a Garden Concierge
On the afternoon of March 10 (Sun.), we gave guided tours in a rainy garden that was getting ready to shoot forth spring buds. We explained to participants the most important points to know to appreciate Murin-an, the scenery created by original owner Yamagata Aritomo, highlights of the garden in rain, and about the structure and use of trees in Murin-an’s buildings.

フォスタリング・スタディーズ II 第6回「春」
3月9日（土）に洋館にて庭師のレクチャ―のもと、手ぼうきを皆さまにお作りいただきました。オリジナルの手ぼうきをお持ちになってお庭に出た後、ヒメセキショウ (Japanese sweet flag) の手入れを行いました。竹ぼうきは使い続けることで短くなりますが、すり減ることによって、それぞれ使い道が異なる事などをお伝えしました。この時期は常緑樹も少しずつ葉を落とすため、落ち葉集めもしていただき、皆さんの手でお庭がさらにきれいになりました。

Fostering Studies II, No.6 “Spring”
On March 9, while listening to a lecture given by Murin-an’s head gardener, participants in our Fostering Studies program made their own hand brooms. Entering the garden with these original hand brooms, they performed care for the Japanese sweet flag grass there. We explained to them how bamboo brooms get smaller with use and that, as they become worn down, they each take on different uses. This is the time of year when the evergreens gradually lose their leaves, but by having everyone gather up fallen leaves together, the garden became even cleaner than it was before.

無鄰菴茶道教室
3月9日（土）、お茶室にて茶道教室を開催致しました。今回は、柄杓の扱い方を学んでいただくレッスン。持ち方と力の入れ具合、そして置き方を詳しくお伝えしました。指の運び方とその角度がとても難しそうでしたが、時間をかけてじっくり学んでいただきました。

Murin-an Tea School
On March 9 (Sat.), we held tea ceremony lessons inside the tearoom. This day’s lessons concentrated on learning how to handle the bamboo ladle (“hishaku” in Japanese). The instructor taught participants in detail about how to hold the ladle, how much strength to use, and how to set it down. The finger movements and positions looked very hard to do, but participants took their time to learn them thoroughly.

アカマツ樹の伐採
3月9日(土)、北東に位置するアカマツ樹が害虫の影響で衰退したため、伐採をすることとなりました。
長い年月に渡り、庭木として無鄰菴に在ったことへ、感謝の思いを込めて・・・お清めから始まり、ご来場いただいた方に見守られながら、伐採作業を終えました。
伐採後、母屋側から新たな景色がひらけています。このアカマツがあった場所の築山が母屋からよく見えるようになっています。東山へ続くように、地面がグッと持ち上がっていることがよくわかります。東山を主山とし、連続性を持った作庭コンセプトがここまでしっかり反映されているのですね。
樹木にも人と同じように寿命はあり、全うした後には次の景色のはぐくみが始まります。お越しの際は、新しい景色を是非ご覧ください。そして今後のはぐくみを見守っていただければ嬉しいです。

Cutting Down a Red Pine (Akamatsu)
On March 9, the red pine on the northeast side of Murin-an’s garden was cut down due to damage by harmful insects.
With great gratitude to this pine tree for having been one of Murin-an’s garden trees for so long, we performed a purification ritual before cutting it down in the presence of visitors watching over it. Now that the tree has been cut down, you can see a new scene unfolding in front of the main building. The artificial hill where the red pine used to be can now be seen clearly from the main building. You can see how the ground rises suddenly to form a continuous line with the Higashiyama Mountains. This is how far the garden’s original concept of maintaining a feeling of continuity with the focal point of the Higashiyama Mountains has been realized.
Just like people, trees have their life spans; when these have run their course, it is time for us to nurture the next form of scenery. We hope you will take a look at Murin-an’s new scenery whenever you visit and watch over our future efforts to nurture its garden.

「無鄰菴野鳥ミニ講座」／Wednesday: Wild Bird Lesson

無鄰菴野鳥ミニ講座
3月6日（水）の午後、ミヤマホオジロについて解説致しました。
山野にいるのでミヤマ（深山）ではなく、ミヤマ（遠山）から付けられたという名前の由来や、ホオジロ類の違い、お庭に来ていた野鳥についてお話をさせていただきました。顔に黄色い部分が目立つこの野鳥は冬鳥であり、4月の下旬には大陸へ渡ってしまいますが、12月頃からまた無鄰菴で見かけることが出来るかもしれません。

次回3月13日（水）は「カシラダカ」についてお話を致します。

Murin-an Wild Bird Mini-Lecture
On March 6 (Wed.), we held a mini-lecture on the Yellow-throated Bunting.
We explained the origin of this bird’s Japanese name (“miyamahojiro”) and how it differs from the Meadow Bunting (known in Japanese as “hojiro”). These wild birds, whose yellow facial markings really stand out, are winter birds. In April, they migrate to the Asian continent, but we may see them again in Murin-an starting from around December.

コバノチョウチンゴケ
コバノチョウチンゴケが新たな葉茎を伸ばし、地面は明るい黄緑色の絨毯が拡がり始めました。1茎1茎が密接して大きな集合体となり、お庭を彩っています。

Trachycystis Microphylla Moss
The Trachycystis Microphylla has grown new stalks and a bright yellow-green carpet has spread over the ground. Each moss stalk grows close together to form a single mass that beautifully colors the garden.

ツバキが見頃になりました！

ツバキが数個の花を咲かせてくれました。お庭へのくぐり戸を抜けた燈籠そばの樹は、大きく膨らんだつぼみが、まだたくさんございます。

There are now several of them blooming at Murin-an. As you make your way through the garden’s side door, you can see trees by the stone lantern that still have lots of plumply swelling buds on them.

We offer two tea servings with two varieties of sweets. The main sweet and dry sweet each allow you to savor the tea in a different way. This is an authentic tea ceremony that pays discriminating attention to tea sweets, but that even people with no tea ceremony experience can feel free to join!
