Japanese House (Main Building)

Japanese House
The main building is a simple bungalow with pantile (sangawara-buki) roofing. The building also has a small second floor that is roofed with copper (doban-buki) plates. It was built in 1895, and renovated in 1898 and during the Taishō period (1912-26). The first floor has a 10-tatami mat space for guests and an 8-tatami mat space, both of which have antechambers attached to them. Yamagata called these Murin-an’s “meeting space” and “living room/guest room” respectively. He considered the garden to be the villa’s central motif and thus had his house built in a simple fashion so that the garden could be seen from its drawing room.
