Tea House

The tearoom is a one-story bungalow with a tiled roof (partly made of copper plating) that was transferred to Murin-an in 1895. The drawing room is made up of three tatami mats and one smaller “daime” (or 3/4 size) tatami mat. This teahouse is a replica of the Ennan, a famous teahouse belonging to the Yabunouchi school of tea ceremony that the seventeenth century tea master Furuta Oribe is said to have treasured. Prior to being transferred to Murin-an, the teahouse had an ancestral shrine to the celebrated tea master Sen no Rikyū attached to it. At Murin-an, however, this was replaced with a broad veranda with a railing. It is said that Yamagata himself often enjoyed the view from this point and named it the garden’s “moon viewing platform” (tsukimi-dai).
