コゲラの来訪

大きなスダジイの大樹の幹に水平に止まり、時々コツコツと音を立てながら樹皮の割れ目や苔の隙間から餌を捕る姿がありました。尾羽の中央の2枚は軸がとても硬く、足指とこの尾羽で体を支えながら器用に移動することが出来ます。全身は雄雌ともに同じ色合いをしていますが、オスは頭の後ろに赤い羽がわずかにあるため、このコゲラはメスになります。

A Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker Visits Murin-an
Landing flat on the trunk of Murin-an’s large Itajii Chinkapin, there was a bird occasionally making a pecking sound while catching food from between cracks in the tree bark and gaps in the moss. This bird’s two central tail feathers have very hard stems and it can move nimbly by supporting its body with its toes and these feathers. Both males and females have the same colors all over their bodies, but males have a slight trace of red feathers behind their head, which means that this bird is female.
